- 1881 Census
- In 1881, my great-grandfather (aged 5) was living with his parents, George and Maria, and his three siblings (Frederick, Ernest and Edith) at 38 Essex Road, Brighton, Sussex.
- George (aged 33) was a 'domestic coachman and he was born in Redhill, Surrey.
- His wife, Maria (aged 31) was born in Swansea, Glamorgan.
- Frederick (aged 6) and my great-grandfather were all listed as scholars, so presumably they attended school, whilst Ernest (aged 3) and Edith (aged 1) would have been too young. Frederick is listed as being born in Charwood, Surrey, although the other siblings (including my great-grandfather) were all born in Brighton, Sussex.
- The family also had a lodger, Ann Manson (aged 80) who was a 'hawker' (street vendor), widowed and born in Westmeath, Ireland.
- 1891 Census
- In 1891, Arthur Herbert was aged 16 and living at home with his parents, George and Maria, and three siblings at 4 McKays Buildings, Shoreditch, London.
- George (aged 44) is still a domestic coachman (with an added notation of 'groom'), from Nk(?).
- Maria (aged 42) is from Swansea, South Wales.
- 'George' Frederick (aged 17) is a van porter (added note of carman) from Charlwood, Surrey.
- Arthur Herbert is an invoice clerk for a stationery business (presumably with the railway!) from Brighton, Sussex.
- Edith 'Minnie' (aged 12) and a younger brother Sydney Edgar (aged 5) are both scholars (presumably attending school). Edith is from Brighton, Sussex, whereas Sydney is from Paddington, London.
- Ernest is missing, as he had died in 1887.

- In 1901, Arthur Herbert (aged 25) is still living with his parents, George and Maria, and two siblings, at 1 Ensor Mews, Kensington, London.
- George (aged 53) is still a domestic coachman from Nk(?) Surrey.
- Maria (aged 51) is from Swansea, Glamorgan.
- Arthur Herbert is a station clerk from Hove, Sussex.
- Sydney E (aged 14) is from Paddington, London. A new sibling returns to the family - Kathleen M (aged 19) from Kempton, Sussex. Where she was in 1891 is unknown.
- 1911 Census
- On Monday 3 April 1911, my great-grandfather was now married to Charlotte (Lottie) with two daughters, Irene (my grandmother, aged 6) and her sister Gladys, living at 14 St Anns Terrace, Lonsdale Road, Barnes, London.
- Arthur Herbert (aged 35) was a railway clerk for the GWR (Great Western Railway), and was born in Brighton, Sussex.
- Lottie (aged 33) was born in Peterborough, Northamptonshire. They had been married for 7 years, having two daughters.
- Gladys (aged 3) and her sister, Irene, were both born in Barnes, London.
- On the day of the census they had a visitor, John William Todd (aged 22) who was a SBA (Sick Berth Attendant) at the Royal Naval Hospital. Born in Peterborough, Northamptonshire, he was Lottie's younger brother.
